Contravention code 06: No valid ticket on display

The officer could not see a valid ticket. Note the wording: the contravention is about display, not about whether you paid. In a car park it is issued as code 83.

The letter after the number on your ticket

Codes are often written with a suffix — 06c rather than just 06. The letter narrows the allegation, and it tells you what the council actually says went wrong. These are the suffixes code 06 can carry:

cbuses only
iwrong type of voucher
ppay & display
vvoucher
1electric vehicles bay

What the council has to be able to show

An appeal is not an apology, it is a challenge to the council’s case. For code 06 that case rests on:

Where code 06 tickets go wrong

You have the ticket

Produce it. If it covers the time and place, most councils cancel at the first stage. A ticket that slid off the dashboard when the door shut is a well-worn and frequently accepted case.

The machine was out of order

Strictly that is code 08, so a 06 may be the wrong code. Either way, photograph the machine and its fault display.

You paid by app, not by ticket

There is nothing to display. Show the session, and point out that the location accepts app payment.

Keep the ticket. People throw them away and then have nothing to argue with. A photograph of the ticket on the dashboard, taken as you leave, costs you two seconds and wins these outright.

Code 06 questions, answered

I still have the ticket. Is that enough to cancel a code 06?

It usually is, at the first stage, provided the ticket covers the right time and the right car park or zone. The contravention is that no valid ticket was on display, so a valid ticket in your hand contradicts the allegation directly. Photograph it front and back and send it with the challenge.

What does contravention code 06 mean?

Parked without clearly displaying a valid pay & display ticket or voucher. In plain terms: The officer could not see a valid ticket. Note the wording: the contravention is about display, not about whether you paid. In a car park it is issued as code 83.

How much is a code 06 penalty?

Code 06 sits in the lower band, so it carries the cheaper of the two rates that council uses. Outside London that is commonly around £50; in London £110 in Band A or £90 in Band B. Half is normally taken off if you pay within 14 days, and your notice states the actual figures.

What is the difference between code 06 and code 83?

They describe the same behaviour in different places. Code 06 is used on-street; code 83 is the off-street version, issued in a council car park. The facts you would argue are the same, and only the location and the code on the notice change.

Your notice is definitive. This page explains the national code. Councils use extra codes and local suffixes, and the wording printed on your own notice always takes precedence. Check the deadline on the notice before you do anything else — the discount usually runs out after 14 days.
